How To Maintain Hair Extensions | The Cooperative Salon

Congratulations on investing in yourself and getting hair extensions, they’re a fun and beautiful way to add length and volume to your look with ease! Now comes the important part, looking after them to keep them looking their best between hair appointments. We’re glad you found this blog post, we’re giving you all of our tips and tricks to maintain hair extensions at home.

Our Tips And Tricks

It’s essential to form great habits when it comes to maintaining hair extensions, not only will they safeguard your investment, but your hair (and hairdresser) will thank you for it.

Daily Brushing

We highly recommend brushing your hair 2-3 times daily to prevent tangling. Incorporate brushing into your morning and evening routine and during the day where possible. Think of it as a mindful therapeutic practice that allows you to connect back to the present moment and yourself a few times per day.

Maintain Hair Extensions
When brushing your hair and hair extensions, hold the top of your wefts to prevent any pulling and movement and start from the bottom and work your way up, this is the best way to prevent big tangles.

Washing & Hydrating

For the best results when washing your hair, brush first and then shampoo and condition gently between each row of wefts and rinse thoroughly. This will ensure there is no build up of product that may be difficult to remove later.

After washing your hair, apply an oil or serum to lock in the hydration, your hairstylist can recommend the best options for you. We also recommend using a hair mask once per week to seal in the hydration for the week.

Styling Products

To get the best out of your hair, and keep it looking nourished and sleek, stick to stylist recommended, salon quality products that are sulphate and paraben free.

When applying your products, make sure your hair is dry first as this is how they’re most effective. Then when it comes to heat styling your hair, please use a heat protectant, trust us, you’ll notice the difference.

Avoid Wet Hair

Dry hair is your best friend, when it comes to hair extensions, you want to avoid having wet hair for extended periods of time. We recommend, after showering, working out, or any water exposure, dry your hair as soon as possible, particularly the top of your hair where your wefts are tied.

This means no sleeping with wet hair! Once it’s dried, you can style it in a bun or a loose braid to avoid tangles and breakage.

Maintain Hair Extensions

Advice for Swimming

If you plan on swimming in the pool or ocean, avoid getting your hair wet. If you have to submerge your head into the water, prior to swimming, rinse your hair with tap water and apply a leave-in conditioner, this will help to protect your hair.

Contrary to popular belief, don’t braid your hair when you go swimming, instead of style your hair in tight low buns. Braiding your hair while wet is a myth that is very damaging. Keep an eye on our social media as I will be launching a video on the topic soon to explain more.

Calling All Brides To Be

Are you planning your upcoming wedding? As you begin to put together all of the puzzle pieces for your special day, don’t forget about the most important part… the HAIR! So many times, brides are so focused on the dress, the venue, or the guest list, that they often forget this finishing touch which can take your appearance to the next level. Let’s take a look at one of the easiest options for your wedding day hair.

cooperative salon image hair salon

Introducing Breaded Sewn Row

When it comes to your wedding day hair, you’ll want to have longer and thicker hair to create a luxurious look that complements your dress and make-up. Skinny Weft is a method of installing hair extensions that creates natural results without damaging your real hair during the process.

You’ll be amazed at the results it produces, which will look incredible alongside your dress for the day.

One of the biggest concerns for brides-to-be on their wedding day is how long everything will take to get ready. We know that you’ll be working with a tight schedule in the days leading up to your wedding, so the good news is Skinny Weft usually takes just 90 minutes from the start to the end of the process.

You won’t have to spend a whole afternoon in a chair worrying about everything else you should be doing before the ceremony, and you’ll find the whole experience to be relaxing and painless.

Available For All Hair Types

One of the most commonly asked questions about hair extensions is whether they are suitable for all hair types. Skinny Weft works on even the finest hair and yet also looks fantastic when applied to thick hair. It uses less than 10% of your hair in the process, and it achieves full coverage without needing the same amount of time and effort as individual extensions.

As with anything in life, we always recommend investing in the best hair extension installation option, so you won’t have to worry about anything happening to your hair during your wedding day. With so much else going on, your hair should be the last thing on your mind, and thanks to using Skinny Weft, your hair will look stunning during the ceremony through to the end of the reception.

Skinny Weft is a versatile option, and it still allows you to grow your hair in a healthy manner. It’s a very secure solution, and you won’t find it’s affected by any products you use on your wedding day. You can also still consider coloring your hair while the extensions are in, which is something many brides also like to do before their big day.

It’s super easy to separate your extensions from your natural hair, making any root touch-ups you may need nice and easy. We just recommend avoiding bleach agents on the beads to ensure you enjoy long-lasting results.

To get an idea of how your hair could look on your upcoming wedding day, head over to my Instagram accounts at @nataliadidmyhair and @cooperativehair. Feel free to leave any questions you may have below, and I’ll get back to you as soon as possible.

Why Is It Important to Invest in Hair Extensions?

When we think of treating ourselves, the thought of luxury handbags and shoes come to mind. I know I’m not the only one who daydreams about a new Chanel or Louis Vuitton purchase. Scrolling Instagram can definitely influence our wardrobe choices, however given the events of the past year, it’s time to shift our investment purchases in another direction. In comes hair extensions, also considered a luxury service, however one that you can enjoy every day, no matter what outfit you’re wearing. If you want to learn more about why it’s important to invest in hair extensions, keep reading!

cooperative salon image hair salon

Invest In Yourself

As we’ve already alluded to, when we’ve got our eye on a new luxury handbag, we research everything from the availability, material, durability, hardware choices, sizes and price. With the cost of luxury handbags continuously increasing, we all tend to make more considered decisions to ensure we get the most cost-per-wear and that it will still be fashionable for many years to come. I want you to think the same way about your hair extensions, after all, they are enhancing your natural look on a daily basis no matter what look you’re wearing.

The lifechanging year that was 2020 has certainly also changed our perspective on what’s important in life. As we’ve all had more time indoors at home, we’ve also had more time to sort through our clothes, beauty cabinets, hair accessories and choices. I don’t know about you, but I feel like I saw almost everyone change their hairstyle in 2020. Because we weren’t necessarily able to express our individuality and creativity through our fashion sense on the streets, we took to changing up our beauty routine and looks as this was something much more accessible.

Zoom meetings with their up close and personal video chat feature may have made you consider changing your hairstyle. I’ve heard a lot of people mention that COVID-19 took a toll on their self-esteem and mental health with the focus shifting towards people spending more time on social media. When it comes to your appearance, I want you to feel empowered when you look in the mirror and I know that having your dream hair will help you achieve that!

Investing In Quality Is Better In The Long Run

If you are considering hair extensions to change up your look, like you would a luxury handbag or designer shoes, I highly recommend investing in high-quality extensions. They will make your hair look luxuriously thick and long while also giving you longevity as long as you look after them well. For a more in-depth look into the different types of hair extensions, I recommend reading our blog post, Should You Get Machine Weft, Flat Weft or Hand Tied Hair Extensions [link to article], it will help you make the right decision for you.

While you are researching hair extensions, I suggest you explore things like:

  • The type of hair extension best suited to your hair
  • The maintenance required to keep them in excellent condition
  • Your desired length and thickness
  • The styles you want to be able to create
  • Whether they are real human hair extensions
  • The initial and ongoing investment

At Cooperative Salon, we specialize in the highest quality hand tied extensions to enhance your hair’s natural beauty. They are individually hand tied onto an incredibly thin weft by professions to ensure a secure and natural look for all hair types from fine to thick hair, curly, straight, wavy and thinning hair. At Cooperative Salon, we offer Skinny Weft which achieves full coverage volume with a damage free application. The flexibility of our Skinny Weft hair extensions allows you to style your hair in every way you desire, from gorgeous flowy looks to fun and creative updos while allowing your natural hair to grow free and healthy.

One particular reason why you should invest in hair extensions like our Skinny Weft hand tied hair extensions is that they retain the integrity of your natural hair as there is no need for tape or glue. As there are minimal points of contact to your hair, it’s a safer option. With proper care, with instructions that we provide, our hair extensions can be worn for up to 6 months, with swapping out pieces for new extensions as needed. We recommend visiting us at Cooperative Salon for a professional and long-lasting install.

Change Up Your Look

Were you one of the people who cut your hair during lockdown only to realise you miss your long hair? Do you struggle to grow your hair long without it causing breakage? Or are you simply wanting long hair now rather than having to wait for it to grow naturally? Just like a luxury handbag, hair extensions are a great way to easily change up your look and amplify your style and natural beauty. They are the perfect way to achieve the long, beautiful, healthy looking hair you have always dreamed of.

Another great thing about hair extensions is that you can either match them to your natural or coloured hair colour to blend in seamlessly or introduce lighter or darker tones to add dimension to your hair. It’s a great way to change up the look of your hair colour without actually colouring your natural hair.

The opportunities are endless. If you’ve done your research and you’re ready to invest in high quality hair extensions that will make your heart sing and secretly make everyone jealous of you, feel free to contact us at Cooperative Hair to book in for your consultation to chat with us about your dream hair and to get the process started.

To see the incredible hair transformations my team and I give our clients every day, make sure to follow us on Instagram at @nataliadidmyhair and @cooperativehair. And as always, feel free to comment below any questions you may have about our hair extensions, I’m more than happy to help.

Sunscreen And Your Hand Tied Hair Extensions

Summer is finally here and the warm weather will definitely have us tempted to lounge by the pool, spend a day at the beach and generally be outdoors more. To make sure you’re taking care of your hand tied hair extensions, I’ve put together this survival guide to protect your hair extensions from sunscreen damage.

cooperative salon image hair salon

Why Is Sunscreen An Issue?

Picture this, your hair is looking flawless with the help of your hand tied hair extensions, the colour is on point, and you’re ready to hit the beach during the summer or while you’re on holidays. But then suddenly, the day after all of the fun, you start noticing your hair turning a peachy tone! While I was away on holidays in Hawaii, I started thinking more about the potential damage of sunscreen on your hair extensions and how I protect mine.

Due to ingredients in sunscreen like Avebenzone (Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane) and Octocrylene that absorb the UVA rays, if they touch your hair, once you go in the water, they cause a chemical reaction which changes the colour of your hair – we don’t want that. Blonde hair is more prone to peachy tone damage and discoloration, however the damage can happen to any color hair extension.

Alternatives And Mineral Sunscreen

Depending on the damage done to your hair extensions, we may be able to remove the stains, however we can’t guarantee this and therefore prevention is key! To protect your investment, I’ve got a few alternatives for you. While I was in Hawaii, to prevent any potential damage, I wore an SPF swim shirt to cover up rather than relying on sunscreen for my skin.

If you are really set on wearing sunscreen, I would highly recommend tying your hair up to keep it away from your skin before you apply the sunscreen, while you’re out at the beach or in the pool, and even until you’ve showered and completely removed any sunscreen, please don’t risk it. If you use a spray on sunscreen, make sure to apply it indoors where there is no wind to prevent it from ending up in your hair by accident.

Another great option is to use mineral sunscreen rather than conventional brands. The easiest way to determine if they won’t damage your hair extensions is by checking the ingredients for Avebenzone (Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane) and Octocrylene.

Some brands we’ve found that are safe to use near hair extensions include clean brands like Bare Republic, Alba Botanical, Cera Ve, Sun Bum and Simple Truth Sunscreen, plus Banana Boat Sensitive, the mineral versions of more conventional brands and many kids’ sunscreens. You can find many of these at major retailers and online.

Now that you have the tips you need to no longer worry about your beautiful hand tied hair extensions getting damaged, you can have an incredible and fun-filled summer.

Bronde

Bronde is a gorgeous option, whether you want to lighten up your locks, or try something a little darker for the cooler months. What To Look For In A Hair Extension Stylist And Salon | Cooperative Salon

Are You New To The World Of Hair Extensions?

If you’ve never had hair extensions before, or you’ve had a bad experience that has left you nervous about trying again, we’re here to advise you on how best to choose a hair extension stylist and salon. Your decision can make or break your dream hair. You need to choose wisely to ensure you end up with your desired result. Keep reading for our tips to make the best choice for you and your locks!

1. Ask A Trusted Advisor

Do you know someone who has flawless hair extensions? One of the best ways to find an incredible hair extension stylist and salon is to ask someone you trust for a referral. That way, you can ask about their direct one-on-one experience. And you can see the result and you will gain an understanding of the hair extension process. Just keep in mind that everyone’s hair is different and therefore has slightly different needs.

2. Inspect Their Social Media And Reviews

Once you’ve been referred to a stylist or salon, or you’ve come across a promising option, take a look at their social media accounts. Pay particular attention to the comments, tagged images and reviews. You want to gain insight into the experience and knowledge they share on social media. the before and final result images, as well as the feedback they receive from their clientele. Feedback that is as unbiased as possible is the best way to go, you could look at Google Reviews or anywhere else people can post an honest review.

3. Find A Stylist Or Salon That Understands Your Hair

It’s important to find a stylist or salon that specializes in your type of hair. For example, if you have particularly curly or blonde hair, you need to find a stylist who will understand how best to work with your tresses and how to match and blend hair extensions seamlessly. The same goes if you have a particular hair concern, like if you are thinning and that’s the reason for wanting hair extensions. Finding a stylist and salon that understands how best to cater to your needs is important. You can do this by simply calling or visiting a salon and asking what they specialize in. If it isn’t pointed out via other means such as a website or social media.

4. Invest In Quality

It goes without saying that you need to invest in quality when it comes to hair extensions. If you want hair extensions and a result that is high-quality, carefully and safely applied, matched perfectly to your natural hair and tuned up at regular intervals for flawless hair all the time, you need to find a stylist and salon that are passionate about the details, are continuously educating themselves on the latest innovations and updates in the industry and take their time with you.

5. Arrange A Consultation

A great opportunity to ensure you’ve found the right fit is to have a consultation. You can discuss your desires and preferences with the hair stylist. Plus they can assess your hair and inform you of your options, the maintenance required and pricing. While you’re with the stylist, ask about their experience, their strengths, and anything else you’re unsure about.

At Cooperative Salon, we’re a team of highly experienced, expertly trained hair stylists that know the ins and outs of hair extensions. We pride ourselves on incredible results, happy clients and head-turning natural looking locks! Tips For Hair Extension Care and Maintenance | The Cooperative Salon

Hair Extensions are our favorite way to elevate our look and get those gorgeous luscious locks of our dreams. Whether you’ve never had hair extensions before, have newly installed hair extensions or you’ve had them for years, we’re sharing our pro tips to keep them healthy and long-lasting.

Maintenance and Styling

Developing a routine for the maintenance of your hair extensions will help you to get the most out of your investment. We recommend brushing your hair and hair extensions with a natural bristle paddle brush or hair extension loop-brush morning and night to avoid knots and breakage. Make sure to do this process gently so you don’t disturb your hair extensions.

If you plan on styling your hair, use a lightweight heat protectant while your hair is damp and make sure that your hair is 100% dry before applying any heated tools like straighteners and curlers. While using the tools, have them on the coolest setting possible and avoid holding them near the roots of your hair extensions. Curl or straighten in sections to avoid exposing your hair to more heat than necessary.

What To Avoid

In the evenings, it’s best to brush your hair, then braid or place your hair in a low bun to protect your hair extensions. We also recommend never going to bed with wet hair and sleeping with a satin pillowcase as this will prevent any matting as the surface is always smooth.

Avoid prolonged sun exposure, chlorine and saltwater as these can all dehydrate your hair which causes dryness, breakage and knots. If you are planning on swimming, saturate your hair with fresh water first and then seal with a rich and thick conditioner.

Other things to avoid to protect your hair extensions include sunscreens and medicated skin care products as they can lead to discoloration and also heavy oils, masques and protein treatments.

Tips for Cleansing and Rejuvenating

It’s important to keep your hair extensions clean as this will help with keeping them in the best condition possible. When washing your hair, use high quality sulphate and paraben free shampoo and conditioner, products that contain these ingredients will strip your hair of natural oils and lead to dryness, tangling and matting. Also make sure that the water is warm, rather than cold or hot otherwise they won’t cleanse properly and lead to build up.

Our pro tips for washing your hair extensions include brushing them before you wash them and when showering, make sure to wet your hair and apply your cleansing products in a downward motion. Proceed to massage your scalp and in-between your hair extensions to remove any impurities and product build up. After conditioning the ends of your hair, rinse out and pat your hair dry, be careful not to aggravate your hair follicles with your towel.

Special Advice for Blondes

Now for my blonde ladies, as well as following all of the previous instructions, be extra gentle and kind to your hair extensions by avoiding using direct heat while blow drying and don’t use a round brush while styling at home as this is a cause of breakage. Trust your stylist when it comes to any specific maintenance advice for your hair type.

At Cooperative Hair, we are very serious about our mission to provide high quality hair extensions that you’ll love and will look healthy and beautiful with proper maintenance. We’re all about long-term relationships and caring for our clients and other hair stylists, we’re passionate about supporting you with the best products, knowledge, services and support as possible.

While our hair extensions are the highest quality, it’s important to note that the longevity of your hair extensions will depend on how well you look after them. If you’re a hairstylist, we highly recommend prefacing this with your clients to ensure that they are prepared for the investment of time required to maintain the beautiful look of their hair extensions in between their appointments with you

Heat Protectant for Hair Extensions

Our hair extensions are made with real human hair, and therefore it’s crucial to look after them just as you would your natural hair. One way to prevent damage is by protecting your tresses with heat protectant spray. The product acts like sunscreen for your hair, it forms a protective barrier on your hair cuticles so when heat is applied, it doesn’t cause your hair or hair extensions distress. Another key benefit is moisture, heat protectors have similar properties to a conditioner where they lock in moisture to prevent your hair from drying out, so it looks and is as healthy as possible. During winter when we all have our heaters cranking is the most important time to use heat protectant as your hair can be drier than usual. Personally, I use Jack Winn Care Vitamin Silk as it contains Vitamin B5, Vitamin E, argan oil, coconut oil, Omega-3, Omega-6 and Omega-9 to protect colour, seal split ends, protect hair from heat, minimize breakage, add shine and combat the effects of ageing. After I wash my hair, I spray the Vitamin Silk onto damp hair and comb it through gently for even distribution. You can use heat protection spray on dry hair; however, hair best absorbs moisture while it’s wet.

I did a little experiment to show you exactly just how effective heat protectant is, check out the difference between the toast that was and wasn’t spayed for protection – crazy huh! I hope this inspires you to not only purchase heat protectant for hair extensions, but make sure you use it each time you style your hair, I promise you, it’s completely worth it.

Styling Tools

If you like to style your hair and hair extensions with heated styling tools like a hair dryer, straightener or curling wand, it’s well worth the investment to purchase professional tools. We recommend opting for a ceramic or tourmaline straightener and curling wand as the plates and barrel will ensure that heat is distributed evenly, preventing snapping caused by uneven hot spots. The temperature on your straightener or curling wand should not exceed 360F, and preferably use one of the low to medium heat settings. It may take a little longer to style your hair, however, this will protect your hair from burning and maintain the quality of your extensions. I’m sure this goes without saying, but make sure your hair is completely dry before using heated tools like a straightener or curling wand. If your hair is even a bit damp, it will sizzle which will crack and split your cuticles which will result in breakage or damage to your hair and hair extensions – we want to avoid that at all costs!

When it comes to your hair dryer, ionic is best. It helps to dry your hair faster which means less exposure to heat and therefore less damage, hooray! Alongside your heated styling tools, having a great hairbrush is also important not only to protect your hair from breakage, but to set the stage for superior styling. A hairbrush with flexible bristles will easily untangle wet or dry hair gently without pulling or tugging on your hair or hair extensions. Having smooth tangle free hair will also benefit you in the styling stage as your hair will glide through your straightener or curling wand without getting caught, making the process a whole lot faster and safer.

How to Maintain Longevity

It can be a common routine to wash our hair, then straight away blow dry it and style with heated styling tools. Even with the use of heat protectant, this is a lot of heat in a short amount of time. When you can, let your hair air dry. This is especially important for your hair extensions as they don’t receive the same nourishing oils your natural hair does from your scalp, making them more prone to dryness. To maintain the longevity of your hair extensions, skip styling them a few times per week, you can always try a cool braid or up style for some variation. Another one of my tips is to sleep on a silk pillowcase. Cotton pillowcases grab and twist hair in our sleep which can result in bedhead by the morning. Silk pillowcases protect your hair and hair extensions from damage and will also maintain your hair style for longer – yes please.

Our premium hair extensions give you the freedom to have the hair of your dreams and with some care and maintenance, you can ensure their longevity and that they remain healthy and strong. How a Hair Transformation Can Boost Your Confidence | Cooperative Hair

You deserve to look and feel your best everyday! You know that feeling when you’ve just applied your favorite makeup look and you’re feeling sassy? Think of hair extensions the same way you do makeup, they’re the perfect way to transform your look and enhance your natural beauty. When you’re feeling and looking gorgeous, you will radiate positive energy and it will do wonders for your confidence.

Hair Transformation with Hair Extensions

When you look in the mirror, how does your current hairstyle make you feel? Are you empowered and confident, or are you conscious and insecure? Speaking to many clients in the salon, there are so many elements that contribute to lack of confidence.

Do you have naturally thin or fine hair, or are you experiencing hair loss? Hair extensions can bring back the volume to your hair and add coverage to make you feel like your old self again. Your hair will look luxurious without feeling heavy or weighed down.

Do you have short hair and can’t seem to grow it past a certain length healthily or you don’t want to have to wait for your hair to grow to your desired length? Hair extensions are a fast way to get that length that you want and deserve. And to put your mind at ease, hair extensions can be added to short hair lengths while still looking seamless.

Did you have to cut your hair because it was damaged or you tried a shorter hairstyle and didn’t love it? Now you don’t have to wait for your hair to grow back. Get that dream hairstyle ASAP with hair extensions!

One of our favorite things about hair extensions is that with them you can create an infinite amount of hairstyles. With the extra length, fullness and volume, you can get creative with updos, braids, long wavy mermaid styles, there’s so much versatility, the options are truly endless.

And lastly, one of the lesser known advantages of hair extensions are that with the natural fullness and volume, you will save money and time now that you don’t need extra products to achieve your desired look.

Do Hair Extensions Damage Hair? | Cooperative Hair

Want gorgeous flowing locks without the fear that your hair will end up damaged? It’s a common misconception that hair extension damage is unavoidable. The truth is, most hair extensions aren’t bad for hair, any damage could be the cause of an inexperienced hair stylist. That’s why I advocate for working with a hair stylist that specializes and has expertise in installing damage free hair extensions. Let’s explore the Breaded sewn row Method that we work with here at The CO I Operative Salon to put your mind at ease.

brides

Breaded Sewn Row

Breaded sewn row is a hand tied hair extension method for installing hair extensions that require no tape or glue, it replaces other methods with it’s natural results and damage free application. Breaded sewn row is versatile as it suits the majority of hair types, it’s safe and effective on fine hair and is also the best method for thick hair. The result will be full coverage volume and your hair will continue to grow healthily and happily even while the hair extensions are installed – yes please! And when the time comes to remove or reinstall them, as there aren’t any polymer bonds, it means that no harsh removers are placed on your hair preventing any damage. Since all Breaded sewn row are custom colored, they are seamless and blend perfectly with your natural hair. Now you can say goodbye to strategically trying to hide your hair extensions.

The best and easiest way to prevent heat damage or to help your hair become healthy again is to simply stop using heated hair tools. In some severe cases, you may also need to trim or cut your hair to remove the dead ends. I understand that foregoing heated styling tools completely isn’t always the desirable option, therefore I will share some ways to minimize potential damage.

The Difference

While other hair extension methods can require the use of up to 80% of your hair to install, Breaded sewn row only uses 10% of your hair protecting you from any damage. The way other methods are installed can mean your hair is twisted and turned at the root resulting in hair becoming loose and forming knots at the root. Contrarily, Breaded sewn row is lock stitched into place so the sewn row grows in alignment with your natural hair, never twisting at the root and therefore never resulting in any hair loss.

Lastly, some hair extension methods mean hair stylists will only advise you to have a check-in appointment after 2-6 months, whereas Breaded sewn row stylists will see their clients every 4 weeks. These sessions, called a tune up, is when your hair stylist will ensure the health of your hair and scalp, remove natural shedding, maintain your hair extensions and restore them to their correct placement without having to completely reinstall. This will save you time and money, and allow you to enjoy your hair extensions for up to 6 months with proper care!
