How To Protect Your Hair From Heat Damage | The Cooperative Salon

We all love having freshly styled hair and hair extensions, whether that’s using heated styling tools to achieve sleek straight locks or bouncy curls. However, if you don’t take the proper precautions to protect your hair and hair extensions, this practice may actually be what is damaging your hair. Read on to learn more about how to identify damaged hair, what hair styling tools to use and how to protect your hair.

Dangers of Heat Damage on Hair Extensions

While it may seem obvious, the indicators of damaged hair include split ends or ends that easily break off, overly dry hair, rough hair texture, white nodules at the end of your hair, hair that tangles easily and is difficult to detangle, general hair breakage, and of course the horrifying sight of your blonde hair turning yellow! If you are experiencing any of these signs, it’s important to immediately assess how you are treating your hair and what needs to change.

The best and easiest way to prevent heat damage or to help your hair become healthy again is to simply stop using heated hair tools. In some severe cases, you may also need to trim or cut your hair to remove the dead ends. I understand that foregoing heated styling tools completely isn’t always the desirable option, therefore I will share some ways to minimize potential damage.

Hair Styling Tools

I recommend heat styling your hair as little as possible, but when you do decide to style your hair, here are some great tips to follow for minimal damage.

  • Invest in high quality hair straighteners and curlers that are ceramic, tourmaline or titanium. This will ensure that the heat is distributed evenly and prevents burning your hair like cheaper tools.
  • If your hair is short, opt for a small iron and if your hair is long or thick, or you are wearing hair extensions, opt for a larger iron. Similarly if you want tighter curls, use a small curler and for looser curls, use a larger curler. This will minimise the damage.
  • Apply a heat protectant to your hair and hair extensions and make sure it is worked in before styling. For best results, if you have fine hair, I recommend a heat protectant spray, and if you have thick hair, use a heat protectant oil or cream.
  • It can be tempting but don’t use the hottest setting on your hair dryer, curler or straightener, especially if you have fine hair as it isn’t necessary and will cause damage.
  • When drying your hair, section it to ensure that you aren’t overheating the same section of hair unnecessarily. The thicker your hair is, dry smaller sections at a time.
  • Ensure the heated styling tools that you invest in have adjustable temperature settings. Experiment with using the coolest settings possible on small amounts of hair so shorter amounts of time are needed to achieve your desired style, I recommend no longer than 5 seconds per section.

How To Protect Your Hair and Hair Extensions

Make sure to protect and replenish your hair regularly with a product like Jack Winn Pro VitaminSilk which will maximize color retention, seal split ends, protect hair from heat, prevent hair breakage and combat the effects of aging. And as a bonus, it also smells absolutely heavenly! Then every Sunday, give yourself and your hair some love with a deep condition, leave it in for as long as possible, even overnight if you can to hydrate your hair.
